5 tips to avoid jetlag

Isn’t it just great to travel the world? Experiencing amazing journeys full of adventure, exploring new cultures, climates and… a different time! The time difference between your departure and arrival destination can result in jetlag. Jetlag is a disruption to your sleep rhythm when you travel through different time zones. Usually jetlag passes within a few days, but if you’d rather not be bothered by it at all, use these tips to prevent it and enjoy your trip even more!

Choose the right time for your departure

When planning a long flight you are advised to always check the arrival time. It is most convenient if you arrive in the evening. You should then have a small meal, take a shower and get a good night’s sleep. That way, your body can best adapt to the new local time and you’ll wake up feeling fresh as a daisy! It is best to avoid sleeping on the plane, although a little nap is fine.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Drinking lots of water ensures you that your energy level stays up to speed. You feel more rested and active when you arrive at your destination. Alcohol and coffee are a no-no during a long flight. Eating meals that are high in protein (meat, fish, cheese, eggs) keeps you awake during a long flight. Avoid these if you do want to get some sleep on the plane though.

Pyjama party

Wearing loose clothing will make your journey so much more comfortable. When you fly, the compression in the cabin causes your body to expand slightly. Tight clothing and shoes could get very uncomfortable.

Rhythm is everything

And we don’t mean that you should start dancing as soon as the plane takes off, unless that works for you and your fellow passengers of course! It is important that you maintain a consistent sleep routine at your destination. Get up and go to sleep at normal times, even if you are not tired. This way your body adjusts quicker and you can enjoy your holiday more!

The miracle called Melatonin

Still afraid of jetlag ruining your trip? Bring melatonin tablets. You can buy these at any chemist, such as Boots. Melatonin helps you get to sleep faster while your body adjusts to the new time zone.
