Your rights when your British Airways flight is cancelled

In 2005 European Regulation 261/2004 was established to protect passenger rights. When a flight is cancelled you are entitled to compensation up to €600 per person if there are no extraordinary circumstances that apply.

Since Regulation 261/2004 is a European Regulation, it only applies to passengers departing in the EU or flying to a country in the EU with a European airline. All British Airways flights fall under European legislation.

The airline has a responsibility to inform its passengers in time when a flight is cancelled. The following criteria apply:

Extraordinary circumstances, no right to compensation

Sometimes the airline is not at fault for the flight cancellation and cannot be held responsible. In these events a flight is cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances such as strikes, bad weather, acts of terrorism or medical emergencies. If your flight is cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances you are, unfortunately, not entitled to compensation.

Example: 2 days before departure British Airways informs you that the flight from London Heathrow to Houston is cancelled due to crew shortness. You depart three hours later than originally planned. In this situation you are entitled to a compensation of €600 (£535*) per person.

Amount of compensation

When British Airways cancels your flight and doesn’t notify you in time, you could be entitled to compensation. The amount of compensation is based on the distance of your flight:
