Your rights in regard to your easyJet flight cancellation

Since 2005 Regulation 261/2004 and amended after Brexit to the The Air Passenger Rights and Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 has been set in place to uphold your rights as airline passenger when you flight is cancelled. When a flight is cancelled you are entitled to compensation up to €600/£520 per person if there are no extraordinary circumstances that apply.

In the case of easyJet, the route of your flight will determine whether you fall within the scope of the EC Regulation 261 or The Air Passenger Rights and Air Travel Organisers’Licensing Regulations 2019.

When a flight is cancelled the passenger must be informed by easyJet in due time. The following criteria apply:

Extraordinary circumstances, no right to compensation

Airlines often say that a flight is cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances. The Regulation 261/2004 has specified what constitutes ‘extraordinary circumstances’. These include air traffic control strikes, bad weather, acts of terrorism or natural disasters. In these situations airlines are not responsible for the occured problems with the flight and as an airline passenger you are not entitled to compensation.

Example: Your easyJet (U2/EZY) flight from Manchester to Athens is cancelled because of a strike of the Greek Air Traffic Control. Strike action by a third party is seen as an extraordinary circumstance. In this situation, you would not be entitled to compensation.

Amount of compensation

When easyJet cancels your flight and did not notify you in time, you could be entitled to compensation. The amount of compensation is determined by the distance of the flight:
