Your rights in regard to your easyJet flight cancellation

In accordance with European Regulation 261/2004 your rights as an airline passenger are protected since 2005. In the event of a flight cancellation you are entitled to compensation up to €600 (£533*) per person. This is an EU Regulation and therefor applies when you depart from an EU country or when you come into the EU with a European airline. EasyJet is a European Airline and falls under European legislation.

When a flight is cancelled the passenger must be informed by easyJet in due time. The following criteria apply:

Extraordinary circumstances, no right to compensation

Airlines often say that a flight is cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances. The Regulation 261/2004 has specified what constitutes ‘extraordinary circumstances’. These include air traffic control strikes, bad weather, acts of terrorism or natural disasters. In these situations airlines are not responsible for the occured problems with the flight and as an airline passenger you are not entitled to compensation.

Example: Your easyJet (U2/EZY) flight from Manchester to Athens is cancelled because of a strike of the Greek Air Traffic Control. Strike action by a third party is seen as an extraordinary circumstance. In this situation, according to Regulation 261/2004, you would not be entitled to compensation.

Amount of compensation

When easyJet cancels your flight and did not notify you in time, you could be entitled to compensation. The amount of compensation is determined by the distance of the flight:

*Compensation calculated November '18 rate of £1: €1,13 and rounded to the nearest £1.
