Has your flight with Air Canada been cancelled?

Was your Air Canada flight cancelled? You may be entitled to compensation of up to €600 per person under Regulation 261/2004. Read more about your rights and check whether you are entitled to compensation.

Air Canada cancelled your flight: what are your rights?

In order to qualify for cancelled flight compensation, you must meet the following requirements.

  • You were informed between 14 and 7 days before departure and you arrived more than 4 hours later
  • You were informed 7 days or less before departure and you arrived more than 2 hours later

You are not entitled to compensation if you were informed more than two weeks in advance.
Note that you are only entitled to compensation if you were flying from an EU country, or if you were flying from outside of the EU to an EU country with a European airline.

Air Canada should offer you a replacement flight

If your flight is cancelled, Air Canada must offer you a replacement flight. The above compensation schedule applies if you accept the alternative flight and then arrive earlier or later. You will then be compensated for the time difference.

Even if you were informed by Air Canada less than 2 weeks before the scheduled departure and you refuse the alternative flight, you are entitled to compensation. In addition, you must get a refund of your ticket costs.

What if Air Canada is not responsible for the cancellation?

In some cases, you are not entitled to compensation when your flight is cancelled. This is the case if the airline cannot be held responsible for the cancellation. Examples are cancellations because of bad weather conditions, terrorism, emergency landings and strikes conducted by non-Air Canada staff. We refer to these circumstances as extraordinary circumstances.

Within the EU:

  • €250 compensation for a cancelled flight up to 1500 km
  • €400 compensation for a cancelled flight between 1500 and 3500 km

For flight destinations outside the EU you are entitled to:

  • €250 compensation for a cancelled flight up to 1500 km
  • €400 compensation for a cancelled flight between 1500 and 3500 km
  • €600 compensation for a flight exceeding 3500 km
