This is why Regulation 261/2004 was introduced and has been in effect since 2005. It establishes your rights as an airline passenger. In order to claim compensation for a delayed flight, the following criteria must apply:

British Airways is a European airline company, this means that if your flight arrives with a delay exceeding three hours and no extraordinary circumstances apply, you are entitled to compensation which can add up to €600 (£533*) per person.

Example: Your flight with British Airways from New York to London Heathrow is delayed because of a technical fault. You arrive in London with a delay of almost five hours. You are not entitled to a compensation of €600 (£533*) per person.
